Dead Eye: A Solo Card Game Built Around a D20 Target

Dead Eye is a single-player card-and-dice game played with a standard 52-card deck and one 20-sided die. Each round begins with a D20 roll that sets your target. Your job is to build a Blackjack-style hand that lands on that number exactly without going over.

How to Play Dead Eye

Roll the D20 to set the target, then choose a one-card or two-card opening hand. Number cards use their face value, Jacks, Queens and Kings count as 10, and Aces can count as 1 or 11. Hit to draw another card or stand to end the hand. Match the target exactly for a Dead Eye; go over and you bust.

The Negative-3 Reroll

If your opening hand lands one, two or three points below the target, Dead Eye gives you a second-chance decision. You can play the hand as dealt or reroll and reset both the D20 target and your opening cards.

Solo Strategy

Every target changes the risk. Low targets reward restraint, while higher targets give you more room to draw. Pay attention to your current total, the remaining gap and the flexible value of an Ace before deciding whether to hit or stand.
