How to Play Neon Hex Strategy

Neon Hex Strategy is a turn-based territory-control browser game played on a 37-hex grid against one to four AI factions. Every faction begins with one controlled hex and 3 Energy. The objective is to become the first faction to control 12 hexes. If every hex is claimed before anyone reaches 12, the faction with the largest territory wins; equal leaders produce a draw.

Turn and Energy Rules

At the start of each faction's turn, that faction produces Energy based on its territory: 1 Energy plus 1 additional Energy for every 4 hexes it controls. To make a move, select one of your controlled hexes that borders neutral territory, then select an adjacent neutral hex as the target. Expansion can only move from owned territory into a directly neighboring neutral hex.

Safe Expansion

A Safe Expansion costs 1 Energy and automatically claims the selected adjacent neutral hex. There is no dice roll and no chance of failure. Safe Expansion is the reliable way to grow territory one hex at a time.

2d6 Risk Expansion

A Risk Expansion costs 2 Energy and rolls two six-sided dice (2d6). A total of 9 or higher is a breakthrough. On success, you claim the target hex plus up to two available neutral hexes adjacent to that target, then regain 1 Energy. On failure, the 2 Energy is spent and no territory is claimed.

Roles, Factions, and Difficulty

Players can choose Builder, Technologist, Merchant, Diplomat, or Explorer as their strategic role and select a faction color. In this Generation 1 version, roles identify each faction but do not change the expansion costs or core rules. Easy, Medium, and Hard difficulty change how the AI evaluates expansion opportunities and how often it attempts risky breakthroughs; AI factions follow the same Energy and expansion rules as the player.

Quick Rules Summary

  1. Choose a role, faction color, one to four AI opponents, and difficulty.
  2. Each faction starts with one territory hex and 3 Energy; the human faction takes the first turn.
  3. At the start of a turn, gain 1 Energy plus 1 more for every 4 controlled hexes.
  4. Select one of your hexes and then an adjacent neutral hex.
  5. Spend 1 Energy for a guaranteed Safe Expansion, or spend 2 Energy to roll 2d6 for a Risk Expansion.
  6. A Risk roll of 9+ claims the target, up to two nearby neutral bonus hexes, and refunds 1 Energy; a failed roll claims nothing.
  7. Win immediately by controlling 12 hexes. If the board fills first, the largest territory wins.
