I recently saw an advertisement for a “lymphatic flush.” It was a masterclass in modern medical obfuscation: polished, scientific-sounding, and promising to “detoxify” a system most people couldn’t locate on a map.

It’s the kind of pitch that forces a singular, cynical question:

Is this a medical breakthrough, or is it just marketing bullshit?

For decades, we’ve been acting as our own guinea pigs in a massive experiment. I learned the price of this curiosity firsthand with a beet-based supplement.

Seduced by “natural” performance claims, I ignored the fact that I had no idea what was actually in the powder. Within days, I developed sharp, localized pain around my kidneys. In an amateur clinical trial of one, I stopped the supplement and the pain vanished. I restarted it; the pain returned. I repeated this three times before the reality set in: I was gambling with my internal organs based on a label I couldn’t independently verify.

That experience didn’t prove exactly what ingredient caused the problem. But it proved something important to me: I didn’t know enough about what I was putting into my own body.

Supplement companies have historically held a massive information advantage. They have lawyers, lobbyists, copywriters, scientists, influencers, advertising budgets, and years of experience figuring out exactly what they can say on a bottle without crossing a regulatory line.

The average consumer has a label.

But for the first time in history, that information gap may be closing.


2. The Great Regulatory Loophole: Supplements Are Not Regulated Like Drugs

To understand the supplement industry, you first have to understand that dietary supplements do not go through the same premarket approval process as pharmaceutical drugs.

The modern framework largely comes from the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 (DSHEA), Public Law 103-417.

The legislation followed years of fighting over how dietary supplements should be regulated. The supplement industry and its supporters mounted a massive public campaign warning consumers that increased federal regulation could restrict access to vitamins and supplements.

Actor Mel Gibson even appeared in a famous advertisement portraying a future in which a SWAT team raids someone’s home because of vitamins.

It worked.

DSHEA established dietary supplements as a special category regulated largely under the framework for food rather than requiring them to undergo the same approval process demanded of new pharmaceutical drugs.

The law itself contains revealing language:

“[T]he Federal Government should not take any actions to impose unreasonable regulatory barriers limiting or slowing the flow of safe products and accurate information to consumers.”

That sentence matters.

The underlying philosophy is essentially that supplements can enter the marketplace without first proving effectiveness through the type of clinical-trial process required for new drugs.

That doesn’t mean supplement companies can legally sell anything they want. The FDA can act against adulterated, misbranded, or dangerous products.

But there is an enormous practical difference between proving something is safe and effective before millions of people consume it and discovering problems after a product has already entered the marketplace.

For the consumer standing in the aisle, that distinction matters.


3. The Hidden Hazards: Contamination, Heavy Metals, and Undeclared Ingredients

The word “natural” may be one of the most powerful words in supplement marketing.

It may also be one of the least useful.

Natural does not automatically mean safe. Natural does not guarantee purity. And natural certainly doesn’t tell you whether the bottle actually contains what the label says it contains.

Researchers and regulators have repeatedly identified problems across parts of the supplement market involving microbial contamination, heavy metals, inaccurate labeling, inconsistent dosages, and undeclared pharmaceutical or drug-like ingredients.

Some studies have reported disturbing contamination rates in the particular products and samples they tested. Ayurvedic preparations, for example, have repeatedly raised concerns about lead, mercury, and arsenic exposure. Other investigations have found supplements containing undeclared stimulants, anabolic compounds, or pharmaceutical ingredients.

Then there is the dosage lottery.

CBD products have provided a particularly visible example because independent testing has repeatedly found products containing substantially more or less CBD than their labels claimed, with some products also containing detectable THC.

Melatonin presents another problem. Researchers testing commercially available melatonin products have found enormous variation between labeled and measured quantities. At the same time, poison-control data have documented a dramatic increase in pediatric melatonin exposures.

None of this means every supplement is contaminated or mislabeled.

It means the consumer cannot assume that a professional-looking bottle is proof of manufacturing accuracy.

The label is a claim. Testing is evidence.

Those are not the same thing.



4. The “Science-y” Marketing Machine

Supplement marketing has mastered something pharmaceutical advertising learned decades ago: people respond to scientific language even when they don’t understand what the terminology actually means.

Put a complicated chemical name on something and suddenly it sounds more advanced.

Consider creatine ethyl ester.

It was marketed as a supposedly advanced alternative to ordinary creatine monohydrate, often with claims involving better absorption or effectiveness.

The problem?

Research comparing creatine ethyl ester with creatine monohydrate has not demonstrated the superiority the marketing implied. Standard creatine monohydrate remains one of the most extensively studied sports supplements available.

The expensive-sounding version didn’t magically rewrite human physiology.

Then there are BCAAs—branched-chain amino acids.

Leucine, isoleucine, and valine are essential amino acids, but muscle protein synthesis requires more than those three building blocks. That makes the marketing proposition more complicated than “drink BCAAs and build muscle.”

If someone already consumes sufficient high-quality protein, the additional benefit of standalone BCAA supplementation may be limited.

That doesn’t fit neatly onto the side of a neon-colored tub.


5. Greens Powders and the Power of the Proprietary Blend

Then we arrive at one of the internet’s favorite products:

Greens powders.

Their marketing is brilliant.

Take dozens of vegetables, herbs, vitamins, minerals, extracts, mushrooms, probiotics, and exotic-sounding plants. Grind the idea of all of them into a scoop. Put green mountains or a sunrise on the package. Add words like superfood, vitality, detox, immunity, gut health, energy, and wellness.

Now charge a premium.

The word “superfood” itself has no standardized scientific definition that magically transforms an ingredient into something your body desperately needs.

The more important issue can be the proprietary blend.

A label might tell you that several ingredients collectively weigh a certain amount without clearly telling you how much of every individual ingredient is present. That makes an obvious question surprisingly difficult to answer:

Is there enough of the supposedly beneficial ingredient in the product to reproduce the effect seen in the research being used to sell it?

That is the question marketing departments would rather you not ask.

More isn’t necessarily better, either. Enormous percentages of certain water-soluble vitamins may look impressive on a label, but the body regulates and excretes excess amounts of many of them.

A giant number printed on a nutrition panel is not automatically evidence of a giant health benefit.


6. AI Changes the Information Advantage

This is where things become interesting.

The supplement industry’s greatest advantage may never have been the supplement itself.

It was the cost of checking the claim.

Imagine standing in a store 20 years ago looking at a bottle promising improved circulation, testosterone, memory, energy, sleep, metabolism, immunity, or “detoxification.”

What were you supposed to do?

Go home.

Find a medical library.

Search scientific journals.

Learn the terminology.

Locate the study.

Determine whether the study involved humans.

Figure out the sample size.

Determine whether researchers tested the actual commercial product or merely one ingredient contained somewhere inside it.

Then figure out whether the amount used in the research even matches the amount inside the capsule.

Almost nobody was going to do that while standing in a store.

Today, the consumer can potentially begin that investigation before reaching the cash register.

You have a smartphone.

You have a camera.

And increasingly, you have an AI system capable of translating scientific literature into ordinary English.

Walk into a supplement store with AI and suddenly you can ask:

  • What evidence supports this ingredient?
  • Was it tested in humans?
  • Was the finished product tested, or just an ingredient?
  • Does this bottle contain the dosage used in the study?
  • How large was the study?
  • Was there a placebo group?
  • Who funded the research?
  • Have independent researchers reproduced the result?
  • Are there known drug interactions or safety concerns?
  • Has this company or product been subject to FDA warnings or recalls?

That is an entirely different consumer.

The salesman has a pitch.

The customer now has a research department in his pocket.


7. The Three-AI Test: Make the Machines Disagree

There is one enormous problem with using AI this way.

AI can also be wrong.

Large language models are trained on the same polluted information ecosystem the rest of us inhabit. That ecosystem contains excellent peer-reviewed research, weak research, outdated research, corporate press releases, affiliate websites, SEO garbage, influencer nonsense, and confidently repeated myths.

AI is not a truth machine.

So don’t treat it like one.

Instead, I use what I call the Three-AI Test.

Ask three different AI systems the same narrowly defined question about a supplement.

For example:

“What randomized human clinical trials support this ingredient at this dosage for this specific claimed benefit?”

Then compare the answers.

If all three systems reach approximately the same conclusion, you still verify the underlying research.

But disagreement may be even more useful.

If ChatGPT says the evidence is strong, Claude says it is mixed, and Gemini says there isn’t enough human evidence, congratulations:

You just found the hole.

Now investigate the disagreement.

Maybe one AI relied on animal studies.

Maybe another found a newer systematic review.

Maybe the “clinical study” involved 18 people.

Maybe the research tested 500 milligrams while the supplement contains 50.

Maybe every article praising the ingredient ultimately traces back to the same manufacturer-funded study.

The disagreement becomes the map.

AI doesn’t replace judgment. It gives judgment more horsepower.

The goal isn’t to find an AI that gives you the answer you want. The goal is to use multiple analytical systems to identify exactly where the science ends and the marketing begins.


8. Follow the Evidence Backward

There is another step consumers should learn.

Never stop at the AI answer.

Make the AI show its work.

Ask for the actual study.

Ask for the DOI or PubMed record.

Ask how many humans participated.

Ask how long the experiment lasted.

Ask whether the participants were healthy, sick, young, elderly, trained athletes, sedentary adults, men, women, or some narrow population that looks nothing like you.

Then ask the killer question:

“Does this research actually support what the company printed on this bottle?”

Those two things are frequently not identical.

A study might show a modest biological effect under controlled conditions while the advertisement transforms it into a sweeping claim about energy, immunity, recovery, longevity, or performance.

That translation—from what the study actually demonstrated to what the advertisement makes you think it demonstrated—is where consumers need to pay attention.

AI makes that translation much easier to inspect.


9. The Supplement Companies That Survive AI May Be the Better Ones

There is an irony here.

AI does not necessarily have to destroy the supplement industry.

It could clean it up.

Companies selling accurately labeled products at evidence-supported dosages have far less to fear from an informed consumer than companies surviving on proprietary blends, exaggerated claims, meaningless terminology, and scientific studies that collapse the moment somebody actually reads them.

Imagine where this goes.

A consumer scans a barcode.

AI identifies every ingredient.

It compares the dosage with published human research.

It checks known interactions.

It searches FDA warnings and recalls.

It identifies whether the supporting research was independently funded.

Then it translates everything into ordinary English before the consumer decides whether to buy.

Suddenly, the prettiest bottle doesn’t automatically win.

The evidence does.

That is potentially devastating to bad supplement companies.

And potentially very good for legitimate ones.


10. Conclusion: The Question That Changes Everything

For decades, the consumer was hopelessly outgunned.

We trusted the bottle partly because the alternative—spending dozens of hours reading medical journals—was a barrier too high for most people to climb.

The information advantage belonged to the seller.

AI changes that equation.

Not because AI always knows the truth.

It doesn’t.

Not because AI should replace doctors, pharmacists, toxicologists, or researchers.

It shouldn’t.

AI changes the equation because it dramatically reduces the cost of asking the next question.

And that may be the supplement industry’s worst nightmare.

The most potent tool in your health arsenal may not be another pill, powder, gummy, extract, proprietary blend, or $100 tub of green dust.

It may be the question you ask while standing in the supplement aisle:

“Is this actually true?”

Then another:

“Show me the evidence.”

Then the one that marketers have historically been able to count on consumers never having enough time, knowledge, or patience to ask:

“Does the evidence actually prove what you’re selling me?”

The era of blind trust is ending.

You can trust the sunrise graphics.

You can trust the influencer.

You can trust the complicated ingredient name.

Or you can pull the supercomputer out of your pocket and start asking questions.

I know which one scares the bullshit artists more.
